Refurbished laboratory equipment can save a facility a large share of the cost of new — but only if it is genuinely reconditioned and stands behind a warranty. Here is how to tell the difference, and when refurbished is the smarter buy.
What "certified refurbished" should mean
Refurbished is not the same as second-hand. A properly refurbished instrument has been stripped down, inspected, cleaned and serviced; worn or failing parts are replaced; and its performance — temperature, speed, calibration — is tested and verified before it is offered for sale. "Certified" should mean that process is documented and the unit is backed by a warranty. If a seller can't describe what they actually did to the machine, treat it as used, not refurbished.
Where the savings come from
Premium laboratory brands hold their build quality for many years. A blood bank refrigerator, centrifuge or freezer that has been reconditioned to specification can deliver the same day-to-day performance as a new one at a fraction of the price — which often means a facility can equip a whole department, or add redundancy, for the budget of a single new unit.
When refurbished makes sense
- You need proven, mature equipment rather than the latest model year
- Budget is tight and you'd rather buy two reliable units than one new one
- You want a specific discontinued model your workflow is already built around
- You value local service and spares over a factory warranty you can't easily use
When to buy new instead
Some situations favour new: when you need the newest features or connectivity, when a grant or tender specifically requires new equipment, or when a manufacturer's full warranty is a hard requirement. A good supplier will tell you honestly when new is the better call — and Hi-Tech also manufactures its own new equipment line for exactly those cases.
What to check before you buy refurbished
- Testing: ask what was inspected and how performance was verified.
- Warranty: confirm what's covered and for how long, in writing.
- Service & spares: can the supplier install, maintain and repair it locally?
- Provenance: a known brand and model is easier to support long-term.
